Doom 4 coming

Doom lovers rejoice, John C. has revealed that Doom 4 will happen!
Work on the sequel to hasn't begun yet, but in an interview at QuakeCon '07, the co-founder of id software announced that the Doom franchise will live on. While talking about the future Id software projects, the new Quake and Wolfenstein games, he mentioned Doom 4.
"There will be a Doom 4, we don't have it scheduled or a team assigned to it, but there will be a Doom 4." - John Carmack - Quakecon 2007
The next Id Technology
Following Id tradition, Doom 4 will most likely run on a new Id software engine, an updated id tech 5 or id tech 6 even?
Will soft shadows make it in Doom 4
When Doom 3 was released, it brought dynamic lighting and shadowing to gamers and took game graphics to the next level. The techniqe has now matured while hardware has improved, giving developers more space to play with the techniques pioneered in "id tech 4". John Carmack has even revealed that he is investigating soft shadows with penumbra (varying fuzzyness) effects for his "next" graphics engine, ie. id tech 5.
Megatexturing in Doom 4
Unique super-detailed textures in UAC? Megatexturing, used in Quake Wars, is in the new id tech, hopefully we will see it's effect on the close-quarter-horror environments of Doom 4, granted Id still goes for claustrophobic environments, now that the technology allows for vast open spaces. |
